Zan,

Loston, do you believe we survived the LSU Camp. I have my own theory on what went down, but was wondering what you have heard or think is going on with his recruitment.

I know Philpot and Ard have said that Loston communicated to Clemson on Monday he was still committed to Clemson.

To be honest, I'm just HOPING we keep him. That's going to be tough b/c he's just so far away that it's tough to get him on campus and around enough Clemson folks to off set the LSU/Texas/TA&M folks.

There are plenty of reasons for him to uncommit and I'm not going to bother as they've been discussed quite a bit.

Allow me to put on my orange glasses, and we can talk about why we might be able to keep him.

As pointed out, Loston is not a media hound. As tough as it is for us to talk to him, it's that hard for others as well.

Loston and Holloman are going to be roomies at the UA game this year. I think that if we can hold him through the season, we'll have him once we get him there.

Loston has done a bit of recruiting for us, making some calls to potential recruits (although I haven't heard about any of this lately). When you invest time into something, it's more likely you stick to it.

Loston has decommited once already. Doing it again makes him look bad.

As CT04 has stated, there has been communication between Clemson staff and Loston. IMO, Clemson's staff is as good at recruiting as anyone in the country. If Loston can be heald, they can do it.

It will be tough to attract anyone from far away, but TB and his staff have done so in the past, so I would not count them out.

I've heard Loston isn't big on Texas, but A&M and LSU are different.

In the end it's going to be hard to get him that far away from home, UNLESS he's see's on TV the excitement that got him to Clemson to start with.

Some big wins early (BAMA), more TV games and great fan excitement with the hill/rock, and he might want to continue to still be a part of it.

He'll also see that at LSU and A&M so the wins will be a big part of where he goes and if he thinks the future holds more big wins

I'm feeling 60/40 that we hold him. Wish we had an early signing period!

I honestly think that the issues with Loston will arise with a couple of others as well.
The bottom line is that a trip to the BCS will solve alot and make this staff unstoppable when it comes to recruiting !
The first step is Bama !

I think we keep Loston though. The reason he liked Clemson in the first place was the high profile without getting burried in the depth chart.

Why is there no early signing period for football? Does anybody know or have any good theories?

I don't...The only thing I can think of is that we're dealing with 17 and 18 years olds. They visit a school, get fired up, commit, and regret the decision.

I know that it was talked about more this offseason and a lot of coaches seem to want it...obviously.

I don't think an early signing period would be good for the kids. These are high schoolers and by committing early (verbally) they can avoid the worst of the recruiting hassles. Asking a incoming Senior to sign/commit to a college any earlier is just wrong. It makes it hard on the college programs but it's better for the kids.

WE have early signing periods for basketball, why not football.

Years ago HS players could sign a letter of intent early but I can't remember if that was binding or not. I don't think so but usually when they signed a letter of intent other schools would not recruit them again.

I think it was stopped to keep the door open until Feb. so schools would continue to recruit the players. It's been so long ago 60s or 70s when it wa stopped I can remeber the details of it or why it was stopped.
