Evaluation

Newton is a prototype pocket passer with enough athleticism to beat a defense with his legs when necessary. He doesn't play in the sort of wide-open scheme in which many of today's quarterback prospects do, so he has to make the most of his opportunities. He's fundamentally sound--not always smooth, but very consistent in his mechanics and production. Has great size, a thick build and good arm strength. Can make every throw, and shows outstanding zip on deep-out routes. Has great feet for a big quarterback and raw athletic talent. Possesses good pocket awareness and creates a lot of second chances, but he's also mobile outside the tackles and is a threat to run. Has good speed and can be a productive runner. Can throw downfield on the run and is difficult to tackle in the open field. Shows a tremendous arm when he sets up and is balanced. Can fit ball into tight spots. Makes most any throw between the numbers. Shows good zip and revolutions on the deep comeback, and he can drive the ball vertically when his feet are under him. He's tough to bring down, both as a passer and a runner, because of his excellent size and great lower-body strength. Shows good ball-handling skills and knows how to run an offense. He's asked to do a lot of things--drop back, throw, run the veer and option--and shows versatility. Can be mechanical in his methods. Winds up and shows an accentuated over-the-top delivery. Can be rigid in his drops and delivery. But Newton is a good athlete and a solid performer. He prefers to be a passer first and a runner second, but he's competent in both regards.
